About Us

P. L. Dunbar Middle School for Innovation is located at 12th and Polk streets. PLDMSFI is named for Paul Laurence Dunbar, a distinguished and gifted African-American poet and a precursor to the Harlem Renaissance. Our school buildings and campus have a rich and diverse history in the community.  The original name of the school, Dunbar High School, still remains engraved in marble on the central building. Our campus is comprised of three attached buildings. The Mozee building houses primarily sixth grade students and one computer lab. The Central building houses the main office, nurses office, full gymnasium and PE department, a 900 seat auditorium, music classrooms (band orchestra and chorus), communications studio and WDMS TV station, and full cafeteria. Seventh and eighth grade classes, guidance suite, library, technology classes and three labs comprise the West building.  The Amelia Pride center, originally the home economics center for girls, now houses several alternative and adult programs.

Dunbar became a school for innovation in 1994 and was renamed Paul Laurence Dunbar Middle School for Innovation. The implementation of this initiative was enabled through awarding of the Magnet Schools Continuation Grant. Since then, the Lynchburg City School system, with support of the School Board, has continued this endeavor. The original school for innovation academic program had a theme of Communications with the following major goals:

  • Communication in a global society, including world languages experiences in French, Spanish and German
  • Communication through the arts, including emphasis on the role of visual, performing, and technical arts in transmitting culture and providing opportunities for students to communicate through music, art, and theater.
  • Communication through math, science, and technology. Technology is was integrated curriculum with math and science in 6th grade and ties directly to the science curriculum in 7th and 8th grades with a sequence of modules.
  • Communication through a television production studio and a teacher center for customized curriculum programs
