About Carter and the Carter Lee Kerns Memorial Fund

Carter‘s birth on May 22, 2013 answered many prayers and was celebrated by friends and family, near and far. He was a happy baby. He had his moments, like all children do, but his smile could warm even the coldest heart. It was hard to be grumpy around him when he looked at you with his sparkling blue eyes and flashed that beautiful smile.

Even at such a young age, he was full of personality. His favorite playmate was his 50 pound Labradoodle named Harley. Harley could make Carter laugh like nobody else. Carter had an adventurous side, just like his daddy. He loved to splash around in the bathtub, ride on the 4-wheeler with daddy, swing high into the air, go fast in the stroller and be outside doing anything. Most of all, Carter brought immense joy to his mommy, daddy, family and friends. He will always be loved and treasured.

On May 21, 2014, one day before his first birthday, Carter died in a tragic accident. The shock shook his family, friends and community to the core. Determined to bring good from tragedy, his parents set out to find a way to honor his life. In December of 2014, the Carter Lee Kerns Memorial Fund was established. Annual payouts from the fund will go to support non-profit organizations that work to enhance the lives of children and families in Martin County, Indiana.

Mission

The Carter Lee Kerns Memorial Fund is a permanent endowment fund established at the Martin County Community Foundation in 2014 by Ed and Alyssa Kerns in loving memory of their son, Carter Lee Kerns. The fund will be used to support non-profit charitable organizations and causes that work to enhance the lives of children and families in Martin County, Indiana.

An endowment is a fund created for the benefit of local charitable organizations and/or causes.  Contributions are leveraged and invested to provide an annual payout. The goal of an endowment is to build the fund to a significant amount that would provide grants forever.

Thanks to a grant from Lilly Endowment, Inc. there is currently an opportunity for your gift to the Carter Lee Kerns Memorial Fund to be matched fifty cents for every dollar you donate!  The matching opportunity is available on a first-come, first-served basis through March 31, 2016 or when the grant funds are depleted whichever comes first.

The proceeds from race fees and/or your gift, no matter how large or small, will help build this endowment and support local charitable organizations and causes in Martin County, in memory of Carter Lee Kerns, forever. THANK YOU!

One hundred percent of proceeds will go to the Carter Lee Kerns Memorial Fund held and administered by the Community Foundation Partnership Inc. on behalf of the Martin County Community Foundation.
