Lobster Walk to Raise the Roof in Cape Porpoise

– Habitat for Humanity York County’s “Lobster Walk to Raise the Roof in Cape Porpoise” to raise funds to purchase building materials and provide skilled subcontractor (plumbing, electrical) labor for two new homes to be built on Mills Road in Cape Porpoise will be held on Sunday, September 19th. Registration is online and will be available at 3:00 on the day of the walk at Atlantic Hall in Cape Porpoise. The walk begins at 4:00pm and goes from Atlantic Hall to the build site on Mill Road and back.
We have options for 1/2 mile and also 1.8 miles. The event includes a Lobster Roll Dinner with fresh, local lobster, chips, cookies, and water. Dinner will be after the walk, also in Atlantic Hall and there will be a boxed option to take home.

The two Mills Road builds will be Habitat for Humanity of York County’s 33rd and 34th homebuilding projects. To undertake two home construction projects in a year represents a 100% increase in our historic housing production, and we are committed to maintaining this level of service in York County.

To build affordable, energy-efficient homes, Habitat utilizes volunteer labor, donations of money and material, and the help of the Habitat homeowner. A construction manager trains and leads volunteers building alongside our partner family throughout the construction of the home. These two homes will cost approximately $480,000 to complete, making them our most ambitious project to date.

Homeowners contribute 400 hours of sweat equity, working side by side with volunteers to build the home that will save them money on utilities over time. The family also participates in new homeowner education classes and are stabilized in their new home with an affordable mortgage, lower utility bills and a simple, durable home.

There are many opportunities to volunteer on the Mills Road Build, at the ReStore, special events or assisting with weatherization. For more information, call us at 207-985-4850.
