Team Emmy is so excited to participate in the MN Brain Tumor 5K 2018 and we hope you can join us!
Two years ago, when our Emmy was 4.5 years old, doctors discovered a brain tumor in the back of her head. The tumor was pressing on her 3rd ventricle, causing spinal fluid to build up in the middle of her brain. Doctors first inserted a 'brain drain' in the top of her head to allow the fluid to drain out and relieve the pressure (causing severe headaches). Two days later, the amazing doctors/surgeons successfully removed the tumor in a 6 hour procedure. A few days after that, we received the amazing news that the tumor was benign. Emmy recovered at Gillette Children's Hospital for 18 days as she learned how to walk and talk again. She spent many days of her summer going to therapy (speech and physical) and by the fall, was back to regular life! Emmy is in first grade, she loves school and homework, she plays hockey and is going to play soccer this summer!
We are incredibly thankful for organizations like the Musella Foundation, that have provided the latest research for brain tumors so that Emmy could have the results she did.
Today nearly 700,000 people in the United States are living with a primary brain tumor, and more than 69,000 others will be diagnosed this year. Brain tumors are often deadly, impact quality of life, and change everything for patients and their loved ones.
