Hello and thanks for visiting our team page!
In March 2021, NETS greatly affected our family. When we received this very rare cancer diagnosis, we had never heard of this type of cancer, what to do, and where to turn. Many thanks to the doctors at St. Luke's Hospital in Bethlehem, PA and to the wonderful doctors at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania! When treatment began, they suggested that we contact the Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network. This organization is incredible with support and information. We learned so much about living with NETS.
We are lucky enough that an amazing NETS specialist practices in our area. Other patients must travel hundreds of miles. The NCAN group helps to connect these patients with doctors. Our family was, as always, a huge support to us and gave us the strength to get through some difficult days. Others are not so furtunate. The NCAN group is incredibly supportive for those in need.
As you have probably seen, certain colors represent different types of cancers ( pink for breast cancer, blue for prostate, etc.) For NEC, the symbol is a zebra/stripes since it's a rare cancer. One of our favorite family movies is “Madagascar.” Chris Rock is the voice of the zebra named Marty and at some point, the Penguin refers to Marty as his “monochromatic friend" so that is the name of our team.
Did you know that Steve Jobs and Aretha Franklin both had NETS? Their tumors settled in their pancreas and it was reported thay had pancreatic cancer, but they really had cancerous neuroendocrine tumors. This cancer is rare, hard to diagnose, and can be debilitating to so many people. This NCAN group is so important to spreading awareness, supporting patients, and funding
research for NET Cancer.
Thank you so much for your support!
The Neuroendocrine Cancer Awareness Network. Money raised from the Strides for Stripes event goes directly to programs that assist Neuroendocrine and Carcinoid Cancer (NET) patients, such as our NET Cancer Hotline, Patient Conferences, and educational webinars.
We're a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of Neuroendocrine Cancer, providing support for caregivers and people with NETs, and funding for NET cancer research. Since 2003, it has been our mission, or as we like to say, our passion, to educate and support the NET community as a whole. That’s our thing.
