If you haven't heard me talk about this camp, you probably haven't been around me for more than a few minutes. Having been involved with this camp now for over two years (and a counselor for two summers), I've seen Camp Sojourner's transformative, life-changing, leader-making, self-empowering program in action...and, trust me, it's working.
Camp Sojo not only provides Philly girls with the opportunity to attend a one-week sleepaway camp, but it facilitates year-round activities and workshops which focus on leadership, social justice, and the creative arts. Camp Sojourner empowers girls to be leaders in their communities, to stand up to injustice, to care for the environment, and to support one other. This camp is magical.
My Big/Little Sisterhood with Aminda has grown in ways I could have never imagined through our involvement with Camp Sojo which has provided us with a shared community of strong, (badass!!) women and girls who have become some of our closest friends.
Money raised for the 6th Annual Sojourner Truth Walk will support Camp Sojourner, making it possible to send girls to camp and to maintain the year-round leadership development programs including mentoring, service projects, creative arts, nature hikes, and college tours. Camp Sojourner, Girls’ Leadership Camp helps Philadelphia girls, regardless of their economic background, have the opportunity to take charge of their own lives and be agents of positive change in their communities. All programs are offered on a sliding scale, with significant scholarships.
Last year, Aminda and I raised $1000 for Camp Sojo. This year, we're doubling that goal to help send more girls to camp. Let's do this, people!
These girls are our future.
