MY STORY
With life expectancy in this country significantly increasing, the number of retirees is also substantially increasing, and the period of retirement itself is also increasing in duration. Thus, more retirees and longer years as a retiree are becoming the norm.

Project RETIRED BUT NOT TOO TIRED, another project of the Leeba Gavriella Fund for the Needy, aims to help those retirees who still have many years left to live, and who may be willing to “Pay Back” the society which has allowed them to have more leisure time, and to enjoy the benefits of retirement. We are hopeful that countless retirees will want to still make use of their area of expertise, to help young people in need of that expertise.

The classic example that comes to mind, is the teacher who retires, but still loves to teach, and would like to help children in need of their expertise;e.g., a youngster having trouble in school in that particular area of learning (Math, Science, English grammar, etc.). Oftentimes the fees for tutoring are prohibitive, and young families cannot afford these funds. We will therefore try to link the child in need of tutoring, with a teacher willing to tutor Pro Bono, or at least for significantly reduced charges. There are also formal government programs that try to do this, also, such as RSVP–Retired and Senior Volunteer Program; FGP-Foster Grandparent Program , and others.

Or perhaps a retiree may be willing to help a child in our MOSK project, for children of divorced parents, by taking a child to a ball game, or to a religious service. The potential needs of children in this area are substantial, and this great reservoir of talent of the retired is just waiting on the sidelines to be approached for their help. But additionally, we want to help the Senior Citizens themselves, as well. Helping to keep their minds and bodies young and strong by engaging them in intellectual, as well as physical activities with young people will really be in their best interests, and may keep them alive and functioning a lot longer.

Furthermore, the senior citizens who have retired, are themselves worthy of every type of assistance. In addition to formal federally run programs, we are proposing creative helping hand programs for older seniors, such as :

*Purchasing programs–for those not able to get out to market themselves–we will send volunteers to various retail outlets to shop for these elderly homebound persons.
*Encouraging physicians to visit the elderly sick at home, since many of these senior citizens literally cannot get out to the doctor.
*A virtual internet magazine for the elderly, with current cogent articles geared toward this senior population.
*Providing entertainment options for the elderly, including taking them to movies, helping them set up musical recorders/dvd's/stereos at home, adjusting their tv sets for them, etc.
*Setting up a Medical Question Hotline on the Internet to help guide the elderly to the correct physician or facility, to address the medical needs of this population.
*Creating a special Discount Card for Seniors, to “level the playing field” to procure true bargain prices for the elderly in hundreds of products needed by this age group, from stores that will agree to give Seniors meaningful discounts.

Needed: Start-up funds to accomplish both on behalf of the seniors as well as the children themselves. We are hoping to raise $40,000 the first year, which will allow us to truly get a meaningful program rolling.

Volunteers to coordinate the services of the retired that will be rendered to the children.

Volunteers to coordinate the programs and benefits  for the seniors themselves.
