in memory of Lois Lupin Salzman
As you are reading these few paragraphs and consider giving us the merit of helping you and the world remember the child that you have lost, please allow us to welcome you! Like you, we carry shattered and heavy hearts. We too, lost a child. You and we are now lifelong and forever members of an exclusive group, the membership fees of which are the most horrific known to the human race; the loss of a beloved child. Only those who have suffered this tragic lot in life can truly grasp and integrate into their minds and hearts the words: loss of a child. Only we, as individuals, can know the meaning of the first part of the name of: Inconsolable Loss/Remembering Your Child, for it is the most personal of experiences and it IS inconsolable. And only we, as a group, can extend our trembling hands, try to use our exhausted minds, and reach into our aching hearts, to try to reach out to each other during this indescribably horrible time in our lives.
It is now almost nine years since we had to say goodbye to our beautiful daughter, Leeba Gavriella bas Shmuel (Lois Lupin Salzman). She was beautiful in every aspect of her life: In her Midos (her wonderful virtues), in her devoted role as a young mother, in her physical appearance, in the unbelievably large number of Chasodim (acts of kindness and charity) which she continually performed, and in her kind and giving interactions with everyone with whom she came in contact. Several people have commented to us, “Oh my goodness, how the years have flown by.” And to each of them, we have given the same reply, “Yes, the years have flown by, but not the minutes.” The minutes perpetually drag on. Literally hundreds of times a day, we, as almost surely you do, relive the agonizing memories of our daughter’s illness, of her pain and suffering over a period of years, and of the day that we had to leave her alone in her eternal resting place. Yes, inconsolable is our loss!
As time has passed, however, we have come to one additional conclusion. We want what Lois represented, thought, and cared about, to live on. We want to honor her memory, and the memory of every child who has met an untimely end. We want her virtues, her generosity, her kindness to continue to touch and light up others’ lives. And very importantly, we want to include in these efforts, all those who wish to join and honor their child’s memory in their own individual ways. It is with this in mind that THE LEEBA GAVRIELLA FUND FOR THE NEEDY has been created. It is a vehicle to try and replicate—even add to—the acts of kindness that so motivated our daughter in her all too-brief life. But more specifically, with this specific division of the Fund, project INCONSOLABLE LOSS/REMEMBERING YOUR CHILD, we have chosen to utilize the oft maligned internet as the very mechanism to disperse kindness and generosity in remembrance of all deceased children – regardless of their age.
At no charge to you, the afflicted parents, we will enter your child’s name, English & Hebrew, on our constantly scrolling memorial page, along with his/her home town, date of birth, and date of death, again in English & Hebrew. These names will scroll through constantly, 24/7, as a symbol of your child’s memory never being forgotten. Additionally, every year on the date of your child’s Yahrzeit (anniversary of death), the scroll will illuminate his/her name for the entire 24-hour period, from sunset to sundown. Additionally, by clicking on the name of your child on the scroll, a specific page on our internet site will be shown-- a page dedicated to your child’s memory. We invite you to submit pictures, biographical notes, compositions, what your child was interested in, what remembrance about your child is special to you, any comments by relatives, friends, teachers, etc.--in short, anything you want to appear on his/her memorial page, to us for inclusion on that page.
The page belongs to you and the memory of your child. And again, there is no charge. If at any time, however, you or your relatives or friends, would like to contribute to any of the divisions, or to the general fund, of the LEEBA GAVRIELLA FUND FOR THE NEEDY, we would certainly be most appreciative. If you would like to have these contributions posted on your child’s web page, we will certainly accommodate that request. If you prefer to have a contribution in your child’s memory remain anonymous, we will certainly abide by your request.
We recognize that some grieving parents may not want to utilize a page for remembrances, but simply to register a child’s name on our scroll and this is perfectly all right. Again, it is free of charge, but any voluntary donations will always be appreciated, and will help us perform additional acts of kindness in memory of these children.
Our psychological consultants tell us that other parents may find placing their child’s name on our website too painful, and might indeed increase the intensity of their mourning. We understand this, and recognize that, oftentimes, the grief is so overwhelming that it feels best to keep it locked away in one’s private minds and hearts. Rest assured that we are aware that each person’s way of coping with grief is the correct one.
Another aspect of this website will be an interactive capability for any bereaved parents to communicate their thoughts, feelings, or suggestions to other parents, again with the hope of alleviating in some fashion their suffering. Similarly, we encourage psychologists and social workers to interact with parents on our website. From time to time, we also hope to display brief essays or articles by these professionals – all in hopes of possibly converting the destructive aspect of grief into a less painful, more constructive mourning that we are sure our departed children would have much preferred.
Finally, the management and servicing of this project of remembrance, will involve an enormous amount of work—unfortunately, there are so many candidates for this scroll. We ask that if any parent would like to volunteer to help us with this project, please contact us thru this website. We would be most appreciative.
Sincerely,
The Parents of Lois Lupin Salzman
