MY STORY
I am a Customer Service/Cashier at Wegman’s. I am a teacher by profession, but I took a leave for health reasons, and decided to work part-time at Wegman’s in a low stress job.  Well, didn’t quite work out that way.  Covid-19 was completely unexpected, and it has been stressful.  I am not a front line worker, like a doctor, nurse, or any other hospital personnel.  But I am on the front lines for people to get food, water, and essentials.  In the beginning of the pandemic, people were freaking out, and hording toilet paper and water.  Some days it got ugly.

I will admit I was really scared with my health issues, but Wegman’s put in the plexiglass and had a very strict protocol for safety.  I felt comfortable. Many people come in everyday, some are alone, elderly, single mothers with their kids, and I noticed what they all have in common is they just need to chat with someone.  I didn’t think much about it, but my manager told me that people really appreciate chatting with me, and keeping them calm.  My grandmother and grandfather brought me up, and my grandparents always told me “make sure you are good to people and be kind”.

When I got nominated, I was a little surprised, because I am not saving lives, and I am just being kind and patient, nothing extraordinary.  I know the theme is BE THE CHANGE, I give out a lot of change, and I suppose small change and small acts of kindness can make a difference.
