MY STORY
Hi friends!

For those of you that don't know me, my name is Melissa and I am a Sociology PhD student at the University of Colorado, Boulder and an affiliate of the Natural Hazards Center.

I am so excited to be participating in the 2019 Disaster Dash 5K. This year is especially important as it is the BAF's five year anniversary. As such, we are hoping to make the 2019 Dash the most successful it has ever been. Money raised from this event will be used to promote and support hazard and disaster mitigation for communities of color and other vulnerable populations.

My own work centers around the long-term housing recovery of Mexican-origin immigrant populations in Houston, Texas after Hurricane Harvey. Through the help of the National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship, I will be conducting fieldwork in Houston this summer to understand not only the challenges that the immigrant community faces during their housing recovery, but also the ways in which they are resilient.

Please help the BAF in its efforts to support me and other students of color by sponsoring me for the Dash. All donations will also go to my Natural Hazards Center team, Lightning Fast, to help us keep our title of reigning champs as best fundraising team! ;)

RAISING MONEY FOR...
The 2020 6th Annual BAF Disaster Dash will be held in concurrence with the 45th Annual Natural Hazards Research and Applications Workshop, an event with international attendance that will be hosted *virtually* July 12 - 15 by the University of Colorado Boulder Natural Hazards Center.

Proceeds from the event will still support the Bill Anderson Fund mission to expand the number of professionals from historically underrepresented groups in the fields of hazards and disaster research and practice. This year, your support of and participation in this event is more important than ever. Join us in July and run or walk where you are to send a clear message on the vital need for additional representation in our field.
